Displaying charts in the chart grid

Within-survey comparison: Survey x Response

  1. Add a survey you want to explore to the display. In the control panel's Surveys panel, choose a survey from the drop-down, and click the Add Survey button. The survey is added to the column header.
  2. Select a question you're interested in. Note that once the survey has been selected, its categories populate the Categories pull-down. Select the category containing the desired question, for example, "Air Quality." This populates the Question list below. Click on a question (e.g., "How satisfied are you with the air quality in your workspace?") to select it, then click on the "Add to Row" button.
  3. Now that you've placed a survey on the column, and a question on the row, charts display in the grid. The questions on the row are displayed at the response level by default, so you are now doing a Survey x Response comparison.
  4. The Survey x Response comparison shows a single horizontal bar chart at each intersection of the grid. Each chart represents the proportion of people who chose that response for that question. Within a question, all of the response charts add up to 100%.

Note: because the application accesses a remote database and chart rendering software over the Internet, there may be a slight delay before the charts appear.

Within-survey comparison: Survey x Question

  1. Compare a survey against a question by bringing the responses in the row header up to the question level. This consolidates the data into a single chart for each question. The chart that's shown is exactly the same as the chart for that question in the reporting tool. To do this, choose Options > Hide Row Responses from the menu.

Within-survey comparison: Question x Response

  1. Change the row header back to displaying at the response level by choosing Options > Show Row Responses from the menu.
  2. Select a question that will be compared against the question in the row header. Click on the Add to Column button. The displayed charts are the chart type for the whole question (in this example, the one in the column, because it is at the question level) and each of the charts are filtered, showing only the data for those people who responded in a particular way on the row.

Within-survey comparison: Response x Response

  1. Now you will show both the column and the row headers at the response level. To do this, choose Options > Show Column Responses from the menu.
  2. The charts now show a single horizontal bar chart, each of which is the proportion of people who answered the two questions in a particular way.

Across-survey comparison

  1. Any one of the 4 comparison levels described above can be used to demonstrate the across-survey comparison.
  2. Set up the charts in one of the configurations described above, and add another survey by selecting it from the Surveys drop-down and clicking the Add Survey button.
  3. The newly-added survey now duplicates the setup from the other survey, and the data for the two surveys can be compared.

Clearing surveys, questions, or responses from the display

Some questions have numerous responses, and not all of these responses may be of interest. The user has the option of clearing those responses. Also, when the user has finished with a certain comparison and wishes to move on to a new comparison, the items that are no longer needed should be cleared from the display. Simply click on the item in the header you wish to clear, and choose Edit > Clear from the menu. Note that if multiple surveys have been applied to the column, and you click on a question or response in the column header, then that item will be selected in every survey that is currently in view. This retains a symmetrical comparison across the surveys. To clear all of the information from the column and row headers, and start with an empty display, choose Edit > Clear All.

Views

Each chart panel in the grid can be shown as a chart, as the statistical data making up the chart, or both. This functionality resides in the View menu.

Grouping selected responses into a single column or row

When making comparisons of a question at the response level, every response to that question is shown separately in its own chart (except in the case of satisfaction scale questions, explained below). You may wish to group some of these responses together. To do so, click on the responses you wish to group in the header (holding down the Ctrl key to select multiple items) and choose Options > Group Selected Responses. Ungroup those responses in the same manner - select the grouped response and choose Options > Ungroup Selected Responses.

Binning responses for satisfaction scale questions

When showing satisfaction scale questions at the response level, the responses are placed into 3 "bins": Satisfied, Neutral, and Dissatisfied. These questions are on a 7-point scale, and it is more useful to group the satisfied responses together, and the dissatisfied responses together, than to see each of the 7 responses in a separate graph. This binning is performed automatically.
